About EAC

Elderly Accommodation Counsel's aim is to help older people make informed choices about meeting their housing and care needs. It was founded in 1984, and became registered as a charity in 1985. It is now more commonly known as EAC.

Having delivered a free, impartial and highly regarded information and advice (I&A) service to the public since 1985, from 2002 we made repeated efforts to build the scale and reach of the service by forging partnerships with other organisations. In 2008 these efforts resulted in the launch of FirstStop, a comprehensive I&A service covering care, housing and associated financial matters.

Our key national partners in developing FirstStop were Care & Repair England, the Housing Learning and Improvement Network (Housing LIN), Age UK and Foundations. Key funders over the last 9 years have been the Big Lottery Fund, the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), Comic Relief and Nationwide Building Society. Both DCLG and Comic Relief additionally entrusted EAC with responsibility for funding and managing local service delivery programmes on their behalf, and through these we were able to forge close partnerships with over 40 local organisations.

FirstStop is now the main vehicle by which EAC delivers its mission, and all its other activities are designed to support the FirstStop venture. These other activities include:
  • Maintaining information resources
  • Web and ICT development
  • Housing for Older People Awards
This site is about EAC the charity, our services and how you can help and support us. At our sister site www.HousingCare.org you will find all the information we can offer to help you with your care and housing decisions. And on www.FirstStopAdvice.org.uk we present information for housing advice professionals, including a wide range of advice materials and tools, plus a detailed record of some of the local FirstStop advice initiatives into which we have been able to channel seed funding.
