EAC National Housing for Older People Awards 2013 celebrations in Birmingham

EAC National Housing Awards 2013a
200 residents and staff of sheltered, retirement, extra care and assisted living schemes were joined by Awards sponsors and the EAC Awards team for a great celebration on 24th September at Birmingham's iconic National Motorcycle Museum.

Introduced by veteran MC Jon Hammond, our guest of honour Edwina Currie kicked off the event with a lively address. Lunch was accompanied by the music of our jazz quartet The Broadway Broadcaster, and during lunch Graham Precey, Head of CSR at Legal & General, made presentations to the three winners of our mini-competition 'Motorcycling down Memory Lane'.

Nick Abbey, CE of The Extra Care Charitable Trust, opened the main Awards session with a pertinent reminder that the acid test of the homes that his and other organisations were providing for older people should be "Would I live there?". Stephen Smith explained lucidly why Legal & General was so committed to the Awards before handing back to John Hammond to compere the Awards themselves.

Details of all the winning and highly commended schemes/developments can now be found on the HousingCare website (click here to jump to the page), as can a splendid photo album of the event which captures some of the joy felt by residents who had travelled from across the UK for this celebration. A video of the day will follow shortly.

We know it took a lot of work for staff to arrange the trip to Birmingham with their residents, and that many of you had to be up at the crack of dawn and spend long hours travelling to be there. But we were left in no doubt that the day was a very special one for all of you, as it was for all  So thanks from all of us at EAC.

Thank you one and all! We hope to see you again next year.
